Course Outline

ART103 Basic Design is an introductory course that allows students to explore fundamental design principles that support a wide variety of visual art forms. Topics will include composition, design principles, layout, color and light theory, and typography as applied to various formats. Techniques will be contextualized by relevant discussions of psychology and politics, rooted in the study of representative examples and project work. The course will be taught through a cumulative process through specific design projects, each of which has its own emphasis. Read the Projects page for more info.

Students in this course apply their learning directly. The course delivers both practical knowledge of creative software skills and a comprehensive understanding of the processes and standards of building an array of design forms to undergraduate students at the lower division.

The course will ask students to engage with the field of design through an intellectual lens as creative projects are assigned and completed.
