Absence Policy

This course has a sharp learning curve. Regular attendance is essential to achieve a good grade. Therefore the attendance policy must be strict. Please follow the terms below.

Any student who misses more than 3 of the scheduled class sessions will receive an F for the course.

  • this includes the final critique session;
  • this includes any absences excused for athletic competitions under the policy stated in 3.1.6.1 of the Faculty Handbook.
  • this includes any absences excused as part of a Student Disabilities Services accommodation.
  • first-week absences due to the drop/add process may be included depending upon the existence of any extraneous circumstances
  • If you are sick, I expect to hear from you no later than 12 hours before class otherwise I will mark you absent.
  • If you believe you have an exception to these rules, please contact me as soon as possible.

Policy on Class Conduct

During the in-class time, students will be assigned a range of types of work, all of which are demanding in some way. Design software is quite complex; learning it requires focus. An understanding the principles of design will challenge your assumptions about the workflow of graphic design, and require you to know the software to really benefit. If you’re thinking about the tool, you’re not designing. In class, you must follow these few guides – I will be observing:

  • Leave your phone in your bag with the ringer turned off;
  • When using the computer, your focus has to be the Adobe cc software we are using. Please do not have a browser or any other apps open unless directed to.
  • NO social media use during class
  • Do not do ANY homework during the in-class time. Once exercise weeks, etc, are complete, you will work on your projects – homework prepares you to do that work. Your work and grades will suffer if you get out of step with this simple rhythm.
  • Readings assigned as homework will be discussed in the following class time – please be aware of the importance of participation, and do your best to be inclusive and respectful. The critique is CONSTRUCTIVE, not DESTRUCTIVE. You will all need to be able to engage in it freely – remember that talking about a design does not also critique the person. Your design is the result of a creative process, it is not you or your personality.
  • At the first session, all students should define conduct rules they want to see in effect this semester.
